Embrace the North in the Twin Cities

When winter lasts as long as it does in Minnesota, there’s only one thing to do—embrace the north!  Whether you want to take advantage of the snowdrifts or hit the rink, there are plenty of winter activities in Inver Grove Heights and throughout the Twin Cities to keep kids occupied during holiday break and entertain grownups, too.

Skating Rink at Mall of America

Skating

Skating opportunities abound indoors and out, including Skate the Star at Mall of America ®,  Wells Fargo WinterSkate in downtown St. Paul, and the 10-acre lake at Edina’s Centennial Lakes Park.

In Inver Grove Heights, there are outdoor rinks at Skyview Park, Oakwood Park, Groveland Park, South Valley Park, and Southern Lakes. Indoor skating is available at the Veterans Memorial Community Center Ice Arenas, which offer open skate and open hockey hours and skate rentals.

Sledding Inver Grove Heights

Sledding

Sledding is a low-key and budget-friendly way to enjoy a snowy day in the Twin Cities.  In Inver Grove Heights, South Valley Park is home to a sledding hill perfect for all ages.  Other great sledding hills can be found at St. Paul’s Merriam Park and Battle Creek Regional Park and Minneapolis’ Theodore Wirth Regional Park and at the golf course at Columbia Park.

Afton Alps

Downhill skiing and snowboarding

Minnesota might not have any mountains, but there are still plenty of places in the Twin Cities to hit the slopes!  Afton Alps offers 48 trails over 300 acres for skiers of all ability levels. Hyland Hills Ski Area has nearly a dozen runs.  Buck Hill features 16 runs as well as a halfpipe and tubing area.

Hyland Lake Park Reserve

Cross country skiing

For a slower-paced adventure on skis, check out the cross country ski trails across the Twin Cities.   Hyland Lake Park Reserve in Bloomington offers ski rentals and 9.5 miles of groomed trails, including 6 miles of lighted trails and a snowmaking operation.  Golden Valley’s Theodore Wirth Park has over a dozen miles of ski trails for all abilities.  St. Paul’s Fort Snelling State Park feels like a backwoods getaway, with 12 miles of trails in a rustic setting.

Frogtown Curling Club

Curling

An indoor sport that dates to 16th century Scotland, curling is an accessible team sport that involves pushing a large granite stone down a lane of ice.  St. Paul’s Frogtown Curling Club, Blaine’s Four Seasons Curling Club, Dakota Curling in Lakeville, and the Chaska Curling Center offer learn to curl clinics and classes.  The St. Paul Curling Club, the largest curling club in the country, has open leagues as well as men’s, women’s, and co-ed leagues for all ability levels.
