While social distancing measures have made the past several weeks challenging for local restaurants, Inver Grove Heights’ vibrant local dining scene continues to serve the community—and Mallards Restaurant is the newest addition.

“We’re excited to be here,” says general manager Zachery Suddath.  “We’re a family restaurant, and we want to be a part of the community.”

Mallards Restaurant is a family restaurant in every sense of the term: Suddath’s father David and mother Gail are co-owners, and his sister Olivia is also involved in the business.

While the restaurant is a newcomer to Inver Grove Heights, Suddath and his family are very familiar with the area.  “I went to Eagan High School,” he says.  “I literally live a quarter mile from the restaurant.  [I know that] this restaurant needs to be here, because there’s nothing around here like what we’re doing.”

In addition to the Inver Grove Heights location, Mallards has locations in Forest Lake and New Richmond, Wisconsin.  “The restaurant has evolved, and it’s become what we really enjoy eating and what we enjoy serving to other people.  I describe the menu as regional explosions of flavor: New Orleans jambalaya, a Tennessee hot chicken sandwich, a New England lobster roll.”

Mallards has been recognized for its Cajun fare and has won awards for its seafood.  The eclectic menu also includes walleye, Korean BBQ beef tacos, and one of Suddath’s favorite items, steak alfredo.

“We blacken a four-ounce filet and serve it over linguine pasta with homemade garlic cream sauce and crispy fried onions—just grab a spoon and go to town!”

“We try to serve gourmet food in a very casual atmosphere,” he continues.  “I love going out to eat, but I just want to wear sneakers and jeans and get something nice to eat.  [At Mallards,] you can order scallops and ribeye, or get a cheeseburger and chicken wings.  You can come here to watch the game, or people come here for their wedding anniversaries.”

While the dining room is currently closed due to the governor’s executive order, Mallards is offering a takeout menu with many popular specialties from their regular menu, such as the Tennessee hot chicken sandwich, lobster roll, jambalaya, and steak alfredo.

Appetizers highlight the restaurant’s focus on diverse flavors, from Maryland-style crab cakes to Thai chicken lettuce wraps to seafood campechana (a Mexican-style street food made with seafood, avocado, and pico, and served with tortilla chips).

The “Handhelds” portion of the menu features burgers, sandwiches, and tacos, while entrees range from Mediterranean shrimp pasta to slow-braised beef that “tastes just like Grandma Mary’s pot roast.”

There are also family-style dinners, including fried chicken with sides and a Cajun-style shrimp boil.  The menu is rounded out with soups, salads, sides, and desserts.

Take-out, curbside pickup, and delivery are available 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily.  Order by phone, or place an online order via the restaurant’s website.
